The Old Guard 2: After a long and troubled path to release, The Old Guard 2 has mostly received negative reviews from critics.
The first film, starring Charlize Theron as an immortal warrior named Andy, was a big hit on Netflix when it came out in 2020 during the pandemic.
Last year, Theron shared that the sequel had finished filming two years earlier, but its release was delayed due to major changes in Netflix’s leadership.
In an interview with *Variety*, Charlize Theron explained that the film’s production faced issues when Netflix went through major changes, which caused post-production to stop just five weeks in.
Like the first movie, the sequel is based on Greg Rucka’s comic books and was finally released on Netflix this week. While Uma Thurman’s performance has received praise, most critics have been let down by the film overall.
Writing for RogerEbert.com, Robert Daniels said the movie doesn’t give viewers a good reason to care about it. He called the sequel boring and emotionally flat, weighed down by a weak and poorly written script by Greg Rucka. In short,
he felt there wasn’t much of a story to keep people interested.
The Old Guard 2: In a review for Vulture titled “What the hell happened to The Old Guard 2? critic Bilge Ebiri said the movie felt low-budget, which stopped it from reaching its full potential.
Shawn Van Horn from Collider thought the film had too much explanation and was too focused on setting up future sequels, which hurt the overall story.
Shawn Van Horn wrote that the movie explains everything through dialogue instead of showing it through action or visuals, which breaks one of the most basic storytelling rules: “show, don’t tell.” He also said the action scenes were surprisingly dull and lacked excitement.
