Three decades after dinosaurs first stepped into the big screen in Jurassic Park, With this the latest installment, Jurassic World Rebirth, attempts to breathe through into new life franchise.
The story trades theme park thrills for a more noble mission
A powerful pharmaceutical company sets its sights on using dinosaur DNA to develop a revolutionary heart treatment. Their logic? Bigger dinosaurs mean bigger hearts—and potentially, bigger cures. To get the work done, they all have assembled as a team : a corporate rep, a scientist, and a couple of hardened special ops veterans. Their goal is ambitious and to collect samples from three types of dinosaurs: one that walks, one that swims, and one that flies.
The setup of the film is to showcase a variety of Dinosaur encounters which is going to be more intense than the last time. Director Gareth Edwards, who is known for his work in Godzilla and the Creator brings down his signature for a large scale. Screenwriter David Koepp who have engaged with Jurassic Park have retured to the fold and is now aiming to recapture that early magic onwards.
And for a while, they succeed.
This film delivers mischevious actions and some heratfelt movements. All the characters feel grounded and their relationship with each opther are believable. A family of four with Dad, two daughter and a boyfriend who gets caught in the movement of chaos adding a extra layer of emotional depth.
The dinosaurs themselves are mostly genetically altered “mutants,”
the result of scientific meddling gone awry. They’re massive, menacing, and relentless. But the film also have some time for quieter movements including a tender scene in a sunlid where two dinosaurs were sharing a intimate moment. It was just a reminder that these creatures are not monster they’re animals that carry emotions of their own.
Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali have played the battle-hardened operatives leading towards the mission. Both bring gravitas and charisma to their roles. Rupert Friend portrays the slick pharma executive funding the expedition, while Jonathan Bailey shines as a museum-bound paleontologist who finally gets to see his beloved dinosaurs in the wild. His emotional reaction to seeing them up close is one of the film’s most touching moments.
The film have a very clever twist: They are living in a world where dinosaurs are common, they are not found in zoo anymore. All this happen until a bored sauropod decides to sit down in the middle of Manhattan intersection causing traffic jam.
With the film progression, it already begin to loose all it’s steam
The plot twist starts to feel repetitive, all the actions scenes get blured together and a sense of wonder have defined the original film and it starts to fade. It’s not about that the Rebirth lacks with the ambition it have tried way too much that it have lose some of it’s spark.
Still it have enough to make the ride worth
The visuals are all stunning, all the performances are really strong and the film manages to make a strong balance between thrills and heart. It may not be relevant to the one but it reminds us all how we fell in love with dinosaurs in their very first place.
