Dieter Fox Leaves Nvidia to Lead Robotics Research at AI2 Non-Profit

Dieter Fox, a well-known expert in the robotics and artificial intelligence, has started a new chapter of his career. After nearly eight years at Nvidia as Senior Director of Robotics Research, Dieter Fox has joined the non-profit Allen Institute for AI (AI2) as Senior Research Director. At AI2, he’ll lead a new robotics team focused on using AI to enhance real-world robotic systems.

A New Mission at AI2

Fox’s team at AI2 is developing advanced AI models to help robots better understand and interact with the real world. By combining strengths in language, vision, and reasoning, they aim to create smarter robots that can handle complex tasks beyond basic functions.

Fox shared his excitement in a LinkedIn post, saying, “After nearly eight years at Nvidia, I’m thrilled to begin my new journey. I’m proud of what we built at Nvidia, and now I’m looking forward and creating something new at AI2.”

From Nvidia to AI2: A Journey of Innovation

Dieter Fox joined Nvidia in 2017 and transformed its robotics division into a major industry player. His team advanced key areas like object manipulation, motion generation, simulation training, human-robot interaction, and generative AI for robotics.

Dieter Fox praised Nvidia’s robotics team and expressed confidence in its future under new leadership. He also shared that his new team at AI2 is hiring experts in vision-language models, simulation, and large-scale AI training.

Academic Roots and Continued Teaching

Dieter Fox will also continue teaching at the University of Washington, where he heads the Robotics and State Estimation Lab (RSE-Lab). His rich academic and industry experience positions him as a key figure in robotics research.
