PayPal has announced a major step forward towards the global payments by launching a new platform called PayPal World

PayPal has announced a major step forward towards the global payments by launching a new platform called PayPal World, which will connect with the India’s Unified Payments that Interface (UPI).This move will simplify international transactions and make them more accessible for millions of users across the globe.

Millions of Indians use UPI as their primary digital payment system

Handling over 85% of the country’s retail digital transactions. Linking UPI to PayPal World lets Indian users pay global merchants and send money abroad using familiar UPI apps—no credit cards or foreign gateways needed.

PayPal World enables local payment systems to work seamlessly with PayPal

This means users can now pay with their domestic wallets while shopping online or for transferring money internationally. The platform will also support the payments through other major wallets like Venmo, Weixin Pay (China), and Mercado Pago (Latin America), covering nearly 2 billion users worldwide.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI)

Which operates the UPI, is one of the founding partners of this initiative. NPCI’s global arm, NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), has been recently working to expand the UPI’s reach beyond India. This partnership with PayPal is a big step.

For example

An Indian shopper can use UPI via PayPal to pay in rupees on a U.S. website, while a traveler in China can pay at a café by scanning a Weixin Pay QR code through PayPal.

PayPal World is expected to go live later this year

It will also make the PayPal and Venmo interoperable, allowing the users to send money between the two platforms globally. This feature will be available and starting from 2026, giving users more flexibility and convenience.

The platform is built with future technologies in mind

It will be supported by the AI-powered shopping, stablecoin payments, and dynamic payment buttons, making it ready for the next generation of the digital commerce.

This launch marks a major milestone

By connecting the UPI to a global network, PayPal is helping the Indian users to access international markets more easily, while giving the global merchants access to one of the world’s largest digital payment systems.
