Lionel Messi had one of his best games of the season, scoring two goals and providing with two assists as Inter Miami beat the New York Red Bulls 5-1 at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey. Messi was involved in four of Miami’s five goals, leading the team to a dominant win against last year’s MLS Cup finalists.
The Red Bulls started strong and took with the lead in the 15th minute when Alexander Hack scored his first MLS goal off an Emil Forsberg corner. But Miami quickly responded. In the 24th minute, Messi set up Jordi Alba for the equalizer. Just two minutes later, Alba assisted Telasco Segovia for Miami’s second goal. Right before halftime, Segovia scored again after a scramble in the box, making it 3-1.
Despite having only, a 0.67 expected goals (xG) in the first half, Miami made the most of their chances with three clinical finishes.
After the break, the Red Bulls looked better but couldn’t stop Miami. In the 60th minute, Messi scored with his first goal of the game with a nice finish after a through ball from Sergio Busquets. Fifteen minutes later, after coming off the bench, Benjamin Cremaschi found with Luis Suárez, who crossed it perfectly for Messi to score again and make it 5-1.
The 38-year-old calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Carlos Coronel to seal the big win for Inter Miami.
It was the perfect way for Inter Miami and Lionel Messi to bounce back after their midweek loss to FC Cincinnati. Now, Messi and Jordi Alba will head to the 2025 MLS All-Star Game this week. After that, Inter Miami will be back in action next weekend at Chase Stadium, where they’ll get a chance to face FC Cincinnati again—this time at home.
