Yogi Adityanath Biopic Makers Move Bombay High Court Over Certification Delay

The makers of the upcoming Hindi film Ajey: The Untold Story of a Yogi, inspired by the daily life of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, have approached the Bombay High Court. They claim that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has delayed with the certification process without giving any valid reason, putting the film’s release at a risk.
This film is based on the book The Monk who have become Chief Minister
The film, based on Shantanu Gupta’s work, traces Yogi Adityanath’s path from spiritual leader to political figure. Produced by Samrat Cinematics India Pvt. Ltd., it was slated for release on August 1, 2025. However, the CBFC has yet to schedule a screening or process their June 5 certification request.
Rules under the Cinematograph Act and Certification Rules
The CBFC is expected to review applications within seven days and schedule a screening within fifteen. However, the filmmakers argue that CBFC ignored these deadlines. They reapplied under the priority scheme on July 3, paying triple the standard fee, but the screening—initially set for July 7—was cancelled without explanation.
Adding to their frustration
The CBFC allegedly asked the filmmakers to get a NOC from the UP Chief Minister’s Office, despite no legal requirement. The filmmakers call it unnecessary, noting the film is based on an officially endorsed book reflecting real events.
The petitioners told the court that the delay is causing financial losses and affecting their promotional plans
They’ve already spent around ₹30 crore and expect to spend another ₹10 crore before it get’s released. The Bombay High Court has now asked the CBFC to respond to the petition and scheduled for the next hearing for July 17.
