A truck fell into a large crater in Gurugram around 10 PM last night after the road collapsed. The incident had happened after heavy rain in the area.
The truck driver, Satpal Singh, said, “This is a service road. It looked normal, and I was driving when the road suddenly gave away. My helper and I quickly jumped out and escaped safely.”
According to the Gurugram DCP, the incident happened between 10 and 11 PM. He said a pipeline was placed under the road earlier to prevent the waterlogging on the opposite side. About 15 days ago, a sewer line was also installed at the same spot where the road has now collapsed.
The road collapse happened because of heavy rainwater collecting in the area after unusually strong rainfall. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Gurugram received 133 mm of rain in just 12 hours, with over 103 mm falling in only 90 minutes. Nearby Wazirabad tehsil also got 122 mm of rain in the same time.
The truck driver had only minor injuries and was later called to the police station to give a statement.
This part of the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) had recently undergone maintenance work related to sewer lines. Officials are waiting for a detailed technical inspection to find out exactly what went wrong.
The heavy rain didn’t just affect this one area. Many roads had across Delhi-NCR, especially in Gurugram, were badly flooded. Key areas like Basai, Golf Course Extension Road, Rajiv Chowk, Sheetla Mata Road, Sadar Bazaar, Bus Adda Road, and several residential colonies saw major waterlogging, making roads were hard to use.
By this morning, traffic in Gurugram was badly affected. The Narsinghpur stretch of the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway was one of the worst-hit areas, with the roads and underpasses with completely underwater.
At Subhash Chowk, water levels reached up to 2.5 feet, causing traffic jams that lasted until 2:00 AM. Many people were stuck in their vehicles.
Authorities advised people to work from home and avoid unnecessary travel.
Gurugram traffic police had posted on social media: “Heavy rain since last night has caused waterlogging in many areas. Traffic movement is slow and may take longer than usual.”
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Gurugram and nearby NCR regions, warning of heavier to very heavy rain over the next 24 to 48 hours.
