A 24-year-old law student from Kolkata has alleged that she was raped inside the guardroom of South Calcutta Law College late on Wednesday night, in a case that has now triggered widespread outrage and a political firestorm. According to the police complaint filed on Thursday evening, the incident occurred shortly after a meeting of the Trinamool Congress’ student wing held on the campus.
The woman has accused three individuals—identified only by the initials ‘Zaib Ahmed’, ‘Manjot Mishra’, and ‘Pramit Mukhopadhyay’—of orchestrating the assault. She claimed that while ‘J’ allegedly raped her, the other two men stood by and watched, and even assisted in the act by isolating her and forcing her into a locked room.
“I Begged Him To Stop, I Touched His Feet”
Detailing the assault in her statement to the police, the survivor said she was first cornered around 7:30 pm and then locked in a room by ‘Manjot Mishra’ and ‘Zaib Ahmed’. Inside, she alleges, ‘Pramit Mukhopadhyay’ attempted to force himself on her.
“I fought back. I cried and begged him to let me go. I told him I was in a relationship and loved my partner. I even touched his feet,” she told the police.
She went on to describe experiencing a panic attack during the ordeal, asking for an inhaler as she struggled to breathe. She said ‘M’ eventually brought her the inhaler, but the assault resumed thereafter.
“He Hit Me With A Hockey Stick”
According to the FIR, when she attempted to escape, the trio allegedly overpowered her and dragged her into the guard’s room. The security guard, she said, had been bullied into leaving the premises and did not intervene.
“‘J’ undressed me and began raping me. When I resisted, he threatened to harm my boyfriend and family if I spoke out,” she said.
She further alleged that she was struck on the head with a hockey stick during the assault. The men allegedly released her at around 10:50 pm with another warning to remain silent.
Despite the fear, the survivor filed a police complaint the next day.
“I have made up my mind. I want justice. I am a law student, and today, I am the victim. I want justice to be served—fast,” she stated.
Political Fallout: Trinamool Under Fire
The case has sparked sharp political reactions, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of shielding the accused. The main suspect, identified as Manojit Mishra, is reportedly affiliated with the Trinamool’s student wing, the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP).
The BJP shared photos online purportedly showing Mishra with senior party leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee, the Chief Minister’s nephew and Lok Sabha MP. The party drew parallels with last year’s RG Kar Medical College case, where a medical student was raped and murdered, alleging a “pattern of political protection.”
In her complaint, the survivor described one of her alleged attackers as an ex-student and an influential figure in the college’s TMCP unit. She claimed that he operated as an unofficial head and wielded considerable influence.
Trinamool Reacts: “No Protection for the Guilty”
In a brief response, the Trinamool Congress acknowledged the accused’s political affiliations but insisted it would not interfere in the investigation.
“The law will take its course. No individual, regardless of political links, will be spared if found guilty,” a party spokesperson said.
Police have confirmed receipt of the complaint and said a full investigation is underway. No arrests had been confirmed at the time of writing.
