A tragic stampede was taking place around 9 AM on Sunday at the hilltop Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, as hundreds of devotees gathered to the offer prayers.
Rumour Sparks Panic
According to police, the stampede was triggered by rumours that an electric current had spread near the temple stairs, causing panic among the crowd. People began to rush back and leading to chaos and a deadly stampede.
Videos Show Chaos
Videos from the scene showed a huge crowd, including women and children, moving tightly through the path to the temple. One video showed a man shouting “Peeche jao” (go back) to calm the crowd, while another showed that children struggling to breathe in the crush.
Casualties and Rescue
According to Haridwar SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal, about 35 people were taken to the hospital, and six were declared dead, as reported by PTI. Outside the hospital, many were worried family members waited for the news of their loved ones.
🇮🇳 PM Modi Offers Condolences
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that a magisterial probe has been ordered.
“A stampede broke out at the Mansa Devi temple in the morning because of a rumour… We have ordered a magisterial probe into the incident, and those responsible for spreading the rumour will face the strict action,” Pushkar Singh Dhami said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reacted to the stampede and said he was deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the stampede.

CM Dhami Responds to Haridwar Stampede, Prays for Devotees’ Safety
In a Facebook post, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the tragic stampede near Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar.
“Very sad news has been received about a stampede on the way to the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar. SDRF, local police, and other rescue teams have reached the spot and are carrying out relief and rescue work,” he wrote.
He also said that he is in constant contact with the local administration and that the situation is also being closely monitored.
“I pray to Mata Rani for the safety of all the devotees,” he added.

About the Temple
The Mansa Devi temple, located on a hilltop in Haridwar, is dedicated to Goddess Mansa Devi and is one of the five sacred pilgrimage sites (Panch Tirthas) in the city.

A devotee from Bihar, who suffered a fractured hand in the stampede, told news agency ANI:
“Suddenly, a huge crowd gathered there, and a stampede took place. During this, everyone fell and got injured.”
