In a stirring speech, CJI Gavai reaffirmed that the judiciary must stay free from executive influence. Speaking at a ceremony hosted by the Maharashtra legislature, CJI Gavai invoked that the wisdom of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution, to underscore the importance of judicial independence in preserving the democracy.
Gavai’s words weren’t just ceremonial they were a call to action.
“Ambedkar believed that the Constitution is the supreme force that binds the country together in peace and war,” he said. “And for it to function effectively, the judiciary must act as a watchdog for all citizens’ rights which will be free from the executive control.”
Constitution’s organic nature, must evolve with time.
Chief Justice Gavai emphasized that the Constitution constantly evolves. He said future generations must confront new challenges, and only a judiciary free from bias and pressure can interpret the Constitution with the adaptability it requires.
