Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday led a Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) march to the Election Commission office in Patna to protest against the special voter list revision being done ahead of the Bihar assembly elections.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, reached Patna in the morning. He was joined by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, CPI(ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, CPI general secretary D Raja, and other senior leaders from opposition parties.
Rahul Gandhi, along with other opposition leaders, stood on top of a vehicle during the protest march, which began from Income Tax Golambar in Patna.
They were marching to the Election Commission’s office to protest the special intensive revision of electoral rolls ahead of the Bihar assembly elections.
Rail and road traffic were affected in several parts of Bihar as opposition party workers took to the streets to enforce a statewide bandh called by the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance).
In Patna, many opposition leaders blocked traffic on the Mahatma Gandhi Setu by burning tyres, causing major disruptions.
Independent of Lok Sabha MP from Purnea, Rajesh Ranjan, also known as Pappu Yadav, along with his supporters, reached the Sachiwalay Halt railway station and attempted to disrupt train services with part of the statewide protest.
Pappu Yadav’s supporters were blocked trains and roads in many areas of Patna, as well as in Araria, Purnea, Katihar, and Muzaffarpur, during the protest.
Pappu Yadav Said that,“The Election Commission’s special voter list update is taking away the voting rights of migrants, Dalits, Mahadalits, and poor people. This is a plan to stop them from voting in the Bihar assembly elections later this year.”
Workers from RJD, Congress, CPI(ML) Liberation, and CPM also burnt with tyres and blocked roads within support of the Bihar Bandh in Arwal, Jehanabad, and Darbhanga.
Meanwhile, security arrangements have been also strengthened for the upcoming nagar panchayat bypolls in different parts of Patna district.
