The Tamil Nadu Health Department has officially released the merit list for MBBS and BDS admissions for the academic year 2025–26. Health Minister Ma Subramanian had officially made the announcement on Friday, confirming that the counselling process will begin on July 30 for both the general and special category students.

The state received a record 72,743 applications

The merit list includes the candidates that are under the general category, the 7.5% reservation for the government school students, and other special categories such as sportspersons, children of ex-servicemen, and also persons with disabilities.

For general category students

Counselling will take place online for general category candidates, while candidates under the 7.5% quota and other special categories will attend offline counselling at the Tamil Nadu Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital in Chennai.

The merit list shows a noticeable drop in NEET scores

As compared to the last year. The highest score of this year is 665, while last year, many students were there who had scored above 700. Experts attribute the drop in scores to the tougher physics paper in NEET-UG 2025.

Under the government quota

A total of 6,600 MBBS seats and 1,583 BDS seats are available across government and self-financing colleges. Under the 7.5% reservation, authorities have allocated 495 MBBS seats and 119 BDS seats.

Most of the eligible candidates are repeat NEET takers

Only 12,354 students from the general category cleared NEET on their first attempt, while the remaining candidates had taken the exam multiple times. The 7.5% quota displayed a similar pattern, with just 859 students qualifying as first-time test takers.

The selection committee

Authorities have identified 25 candidates who submitted fake documents, including forged community, nativity, and NRI certificates. Officials have cancelled their applications and initiated legal action against them.
