Kargil Vijay Diwas 2025: India Remembers Its Bravehearts with Pride and Tears

July 26, 1999, is a date every Indian remembers. It marks the day the Indian Army completed “Operation Vijay” and won the Kargil War. Today, 26 years later, India remembers and honors the brave soldiers who gave their lives to protect the country in the high mountains of Ladakh.
What Was the Kargil War?
The Kargil War happened in 1999 between India and Pakistan. It took place in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. In winter, Pakistani soldiers and militants secretly crossed the Line of Control (LoC) and occupied Indian posts on high mountains. Their goal was to break the connection between Kashmir and Ladakh and force India to leave the Siachen Glacier.
India quickly responded. The Indian Army, supported by the Indian Air Force through “Operation Safed Sagar,” launched attacks to push back the intruders. The Indian soldiers climbed steep and icy cliffs, facing enemy fire and freezing temperatures. After more than 60 days of battle, India regained control of key locations like Tiger Hill, Tololing, and Batalik.
When Did the War Happen?
The conflict officially started in May 1999 and ended in July 1999. The final victory came on July 26, when Indian forces successfully pushed out the intruders. This day is now celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas every year.
Where Did the War Take Place?
The main battleground was the Kargil district in the union territory of Ladakh. The fighting occurred at high altitudes between 16,000 to 18,000 feet above sea level. The thin air, snow, and rocky terrain made the battle even more difficult. Indian soldiers fought in places like:
- Drass
- Kargil
- Batalik
- Tololing
- Tiger Hill
Who Were the Heroes of the War?
Many brave soldiers fought in the Kargil War. Some of them became national heroes. Here are a few names every Indian should know:
- Captain Vikram Batra: Known for his bravery at Point 5140 and the famous slogan “Yeh Dil Maange More.” He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra.
- Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav: He climbed a vertical cliff under heavy fire and continued fighting even after being injured. He received the Param Vir Chakra.
- Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey: He led attacks on enemy bunkers and died while saving his comrades. He was also given the Param Vir Chakra.
- Rifleman Sanjay Kumar: He fought with great courage and received the Param Vir Chakra.
These heroes showed what it means to truly serve the nation.
Why Did the War Start?
The war began because Pakistani troops and militants crossed the LoC and captured Indian territory. They wanted to change the border situation in their favor. It was a surprise attack and violated the agreements between the two countries. India fought back not just to regain land but also to defend its honor and protect innocent lives.
How Did India Win the War?
India’s success in the Kargil War came through teamwork, strategy, and pure courage. Here’s how:
- Quick Response: The Army and Air Force acted quickly to stop the intruders.
- High Morale: Soldiers showed bravery, even in extreme cold and danger.
- Public Support: The whole country supported the soldiers by donating blood, money, and supplies.
- International Pressure: India got support from other countries, which made Pakistan pull back.
The final victory came when all captured positions were cleared, and the Indian flag once again flew over Kargil.
