In a bold diplomatic move, France has announced its decision to officially recognize the State of Palestine. French President Emmanuel Macron have declared that the recognition will be formalized at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025. This announcement has sparked with a wave of reactions from countries around the world where both praise and criticism coming across the different corners.
France’s decision makes it the first major
Western power and also the only G7 country to take this step. Macron have stated that the move is part of France’s long-standing commitment to peace in the Middle East and a response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis going on in Gaza. He emphasized with the need to end the war and support all the rights of the Palestinian people.
United States Reaction
The United States strongly opposed with this the decision. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called it “reckless,” saying it would encourage other extremist groups and will harm peace efforts. He also mentioned that it was disrespectful towards the victims of the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel.
Israel’s Response

Support from Spain

Saudi Arabia’s Statement
Saudi Arabia called this move “historic” and have also encouraged other countries to take the similar steps. The Saudi Foreign Ministry said that recognizing Palestine is essential for both peace and justice in the region.
Jordan’s View
Jordan have also supported France’s decision. Its Foreign Ministry said that this recognition is a step toward ending all the occupation and achieving a peaceful solution.
Palestinian Authority & Hamas
The Palestinian Authority have welcomed the announcement, saying it shows that France’s respect for the international law and the rights of Palestinians. Hamas have also praised the move, calling it a positive step toward the justice and self-determination.
