Chennai Super Kings have confirmed a sweeping overhaul of their coaching staff ahead of IPL 2027, marking the most significant reset in the franchise’s history and drawing a clear line under an era that brought the club sustained success but has faded in recent seasons. Albie Morkel, Gareth Batty and Mohit Sharma have been appointed as assistant coaches, working under newly appointed head coach Zaheer Khan, in a restructure confirmed on October 26 and 27.
The changes follow the appointment of Stephen Fleming as England men’s Test head coach, ending an 18-year association between Fleming and CSK that defined the franchise’s identity. Fleming’s departure created the vacancy at the top, and Zaheer Khan’s appointment as head coach signalled that the club intended not merely to replace one man, but to rebuild the entire support structure around him.
The most notable departure is that of batting coach Michael Hussey. The former Australia batter has been CSK’s batting coach since 2018, and his exit closes a long and decorated association with the franchise. As a player, Hussey scored 1,768 runs across six seasons for CSK, in 2008, 2010 to 2013 and 2015. As a coach, he was part of the title-winning squads in 2018, 2021 and 2023, and his calm, methodical approach to batting preparation became a hallmark of the CSK dressing room.
Hussey is not the only departure. Bowling coach Eric Simons, strength and conditioning coach Greg King and physiotherapist Tommy Simsek have also left, and further staff changes have been reported. Some reports have also named assistant coach Rajiv Kumar and fielding coach James Foster in connection with the changes, although reports differ on whether Foster was retained, and his status should not be treated as definitively settled on the basis of the available reporting.
Assistant bowling coach Sridharan Sriram and senior official AR Srikanth continue with the franchise. The new appointments bring a blend of CSK history and outside experience. Morkel played for the franchise from 2008 to 2013, appearing in 78 matches, scoring 827 runs and taking 76 wickets. He knows the club from the inside and returns now as a coach rather than as a player.
Batty arrives from a very different background. The former England spinner leaves his role as Surrey head coach after leading the county to County Championship titles in 2022, 2023 and 2024, ending a 21-year association with Surrey.
Mohit Sharma, meanwhile, represented CSK from 2013 to 2019, taking 58 wickets in 48 matches. He retired from all cricket in December 2025 and joins the coaching staff on Zaheer Khan’s recommendation, replacing Simons as the bowling coach pick.
The context for this overhaul is plain. CSK won the title in 2023, but missed the playoffs in 2024, 2025 and 2026, a run that would have been unthinkable during the franchise’s dominant years. Three successive seasons outside the playoffs demand a response, and the club has chosen a structural one, rather than a cosmetic change around the edges.
The new coaching group will also influence retention, with a November deadline and a mid-December mini-auction ahead. Those calls will define the squad Zaheer Khan takes into his first season in charge.
For supporters, Hussey’s exit after nearly a decade on the coaching staff will carry emotional weight. But CSK have decided that the path back to the playoffs runs through a new coaching room, blending club loyalty with fresh thinking. Whether that blend restores CSK to the top will be judged when the new season begins.
