Mumbai Faces Heavy Rain: Andheri Subway Closed, IMD Predicts More Showers This Week

Mumbai continues to face heavy rainfall as the monsoon intensifies across Maharashtra. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and nearby districts, warning of moderate to heavy showers in the coming days.
On Wednesday morning, the Mumbai Traffic Police closed both lanes of the Andheri Subway due to severe waterlogging. Vehicles were unable to pass as water levels rose between 1 to 1.5 feet. Traffic has now been diverted through Gokhale Bridge and Thackeray Bridge to ease congestion.
IMD’s Orange Alert for Mumbai and Neighbouring Areas
The IMD’s orange alert applies to the following districts:
- Mumbai
- Raigad
- Thane
- Ratnagiri
- Sindhudurg
- Palghar
For these areas, the department predicts moderate to heavy rainfall, with the likelihood of continuous showers in some places until late morning.
In Ghatkopar and nearby areas, moderate to heavy rains are expected to continue till at least 10 AM today. Over the coming week, IMD forecasts further rain spells across Maharashtra, keeping districts like Pune, Satara, and Raigad under close watch for possible heavy showers.
Train Delays and Traffic Disruptions
The rains have already started affecting daily life in Mumbai. Several trains on the Central and Harbour lines reported delays, while Western line trains are still running on time.
The Mumbai Traffic Police issued an update on X (formerly Twitter), saying:
“Due to 1-1.5 feet of waterlogging, the Andheri Subway is closed for all vehicles. Traffic is being diverted via Gokhale Bridge and Thackeray Bridge.”
More Rain Ahead for Maharashtra
According to IMD, the Konkan & Goa regions, Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra, and parts of Marathwada are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall till July 28. Other parts of western India are also expected to see light to moderate showers during this period.
Residents are advised to remain cautious, follow traffic advisories, and avoid traveling through waterlogged zones to ensure safety during the ongoing monsoon spell.
