A late-night drama at the Theni sub-jail in Thekkampatti has triggered one of the largest manhunts in southern Tamil Nadu in recent years. Seventeen undertrial inmates lodged in a single cell escaped late on Monday night, 26 October, after allegedly staging a medical emergency to lure guards into the cell and then assaulting them.

According to police, the inmates staged a seizure to draw the guards inside. Once the cell door was opened, the group allegedly attacked the personnel on duty and fled. Grade II police personnel Thangapandi suffered a head injury in the assault and has been admitted to the Government Hospital at G Vilakku. Two other personnel sustained minor injuries. The audacity of the escape, carried out inside a guarded facility, has raised serious questions about staffing, surveillance and cell security.

By Tuesday morning, four of the escapees had been recaptured. Among them was Praveen of Perungudi in Madurai, who was found in a forested area near the jail, and Silambarasan of Devaram. Police have not yet disclosed the full details of the other two recaptures, but officials said the search is being pursued on multiple fronts, including forested stretches, bus routes and village roads around Theni.

The police response has been swift and wide. Seventeen special teams have been formed to track the remaining fugitives, and 16 check posts have been set up in neighbouring Dindigul district alone. Alerts have been issued to Madurai district and to Idukki in Kerala, given the proximity of the border and the possibility that some escapees may attempt to cross state lines. Vehicle checks have been intensified, and local police stations have been asked to verify the movement of strangers in villages and lodges.

Senior officers moved quickly to the spot. Inspector General of Police, South Zone, Vijayendra Bidari and Theni Superintendent of Police Praveen Gautham inspected the sub-jail and reviewed the circumstances of the escape. Officials are examining how the inmates coordinated the plan, whether any outside help was involved, and whether lapses in protocol allowed a single cell of 17 undertrials to overpower the guards on duty.

The incident has already acquired a political edge. AIADMK leader Edappadi Palaniswami attacked the TVK government, citing an earlier escape from Puzhal prison, and demanded a comprehensive review of prison security across the state. The opposition’s argument is that repeated escapes point to a systemic failure rather than an isolated lapse. The government has not yet responded in detail, but prison officials are expected to face tough questions in the coming days.

Beyond politics, the jailbreak raises practical concerns for residents. Undertrials include people facing a range of charges, and police have advised the public not to approach suspicious persons and to report any information to the nearest police station. At the same time, officials have stressed that the recapture of four inmates within hours shows the search grid is working.

The coming hours will be decisive. With special teams, check posts and inter-state alerts in place, police hope to close the net before the remaining escapees can disperse further. But the episode will linger as a reminder that prison security depends not only on walls and locks, but on alertness, numbers and procedure on every single night shift.
