Tesla will open its first experience centre in India on July 15 at Jio World Drive, Mumbai, according to a report by Reuters. This marks an important step in the American electric vehicle (EV) company’s entry into the Indian market.
The new store will be spread over 4,000 square feet, located near Apple’s flagship store in one of Mumbai’s most premium commercial areas. Tesla leased this space in March 2025.
This launch is part of Tesla’s larger plan to expand in India. In recent months, the company has:
- Leased a service centre space in Kurla West, Mumbai
- Set up an engineering hub in Pune
- Registered an office in Bengaluru
- Opened a temporary office near Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC)
With these developments, Tesla is slowly building its presence across four key Indian cities, laying the foundation for future operations and potential sales.
Tesla Expands in India Despite Leadership Change and Unclear Manufacturing Plans
Tesla’s expansion in India continues even as it goes through a leadership change. Prashanth Menon, who headed Tesla India, stepped down last month after nearly 10 years with the company. In the meantime, Tesla’s China-based team is managing operations in India, and no new head has been officially appointed yet, according to Bloomberg News.
At the same time, Tesla’s manufacturing plans in India and remain unclear. In June, Union Minister for Heavy Industries H. D. Kumaraswamy said Tesla is currently focusing on the retail operations and vehicle imports, not the local production.
“Tesla only wants to open showrooms and sell imported cars,” the minister said.
Despite these uncertainties, the launch of Tesla’s first experience centre was in Mumbai marks a renewed effort to enter the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market. It could be the first step toward the more activity in the country, even as discussions around import rules and local manufacturing continue.
