Bihar Voter List Controversy: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar spoke out after some opposition parties said the current process could take away people’s right to vote.
He said that the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists in Bihar is being done to make sure that all eligible voters are included.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar said that the voter list revision in Bihar is going smoothly and also is on time. He explained that this special revision is happening after 22 years and includes the active participation of all political parties and election staff.
The CEC made this statement after some opposition parties raised concerns that the process might leave out eligible voters and take away their right to vote.
While speaking to booth-level officers, Kumar assured that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is being carried out in a transparent way.
“Even though some people have doubts, the SIR will make sure that all eligible voters are included,” he said.
Bihar Voter List Controversy: On Wednesday, leaders from several INDIA bloc parties met with the Election Commission to express concerns about the timing of the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists in Bihar. They claimed that this large-scale process, happening just before the state elections, could result in over two crore voters losing their voting rights.
The Election Commission plans to carry out this revision in six states, starting with Bihar. The aim is to remove illegal foreign migrants by verifying people’s place of birth.
Bihar is set to hold elections later on this year. The other five states are Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal — will have assembly elections in year 2026.
This step is considered important, especially as several states are cracking down on illegal migrants from countries like Bangladesh and Myanmar.
