CHENNAI: The wait is over. Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar with music by Anirudh Ravichander, released worldwide today, October 15 — and the first-day verdict from fans and critics is decidedly split.

Early reactions from the overseas premieres set an electrifying tone. Tracker Christopher Kanagaraj called the first half “highly engaging,” singling out the title card, the interval block and the much-talked-about tea-stall scene as standout moments. Buzz from the overseas premiere screenings has been equally feverish, with praise for the interval bang and the star cameos — Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar — that reportedly had fans “going crazy” in theatres.

But the counterpoint arrived just as quickly. Venky Reviews rated the film 2.5 out of 5, acknowledging a strong first half while finding the second half weaker. The review flagged the SJ Suryah and Vidya Balan villain tracks as “tiring” — a note of caution amid the first-day frenzy.

For all the divided critical opinion, the box-office arithmetic looks formidable. Per Sacnilk, Jailer 2 has clocked over Rs 50 crore in worldwide advance bookings, and trade expectations are already circling a Rs 100 crore worldwide opening day — a figure that would place the sequel among the biggest Tamil cinema openings of all time.

The film arrives certified U/A with a runtime of 2 hours 45 minutes, and carries the weight of a formidable ensemble. Alongside Rajinikanth, the cast features Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty and Suraj Venjaramoodu — a line-up that blends the first film’s favourites with heavyweight new additions.

Expectations were always going to be sky-high. The original Jailer (2023) was a cultural event — Nelson’s moody, black-comedy take on an aging jailer’s quiet menace turned Rajinikanth’s late-career reinvention into box-office gold. The sequel has been positioned as bigger in every department: bigger cameos, a bigger canvas, and a bigger opening.

Whether Jailer 2 sustains its momentum beyond the opening weekend will hinge on the second half, which is where the first reviews diverge most sharply. Fans celebrating the interval block and the star cameos may not mind; neutral viewers could find the film’s pacing tested in its final hour.

One thing, though, is beyond dispute on day one: the Superstar’s opening-day pull remains undiminished. With Rs 50 crore already in the till before a single ticket stub was torn, Jailer 2 has done its most important business before the reviews even mattered. The real test — word of mouth — begins now.
