Wednesday, October 7

The record says 0-5. The story, though, is more complicated — and more hopeful — than the numbers suggest. Central High School’s Bobcats in Phoenix have endured a brutal opening stretch of the 2026 fall season, including a one-point heartbreaker and a shutout, but the schedule turns in October. Five games remain against opponents who are all struggling too, and the first win of the season feels closer than the record shows.

This is a young program playing in the heart of Phoenix, at 4525 N. Central Ave., and the fall has been a lesson in the margins that decide football games. Central lost by a single point to Vista Grande in September. It has also been shut out twice. The Bobcats’ task now is simple: find the win column, then find another.

Game-by-Game: The 2026 Schedule

Aug. 28 — at Sunnyslope: L 0-45. A nightmare opener. The Vikings blanked Central 45-0, and the Bobcats left Friday night searching for answers on both sides of the ball.

Sept. 4 — vs. Vista Grande: L 35-36. The heartbreaker. Central’s offense exploded for 35 points — its best output of the season — and still fell by a single point to the Spartans.

Sept. 11 — vs. Gilbert: L 19-35. The Tigers came to Central and left with a 35-19 win, dropping the Bobcats to 0-3.

Sept. 18 — vs. Dobson: L 22-41. The Mustangs, who arrived with a winning record, proved too much. Central fell to 0-4.

Sept. 25 — vs. Casa Grande Union: L 0-34. A second shutout of the season closed out a winless September. The Bobcats sat at 0-5 entering October.

Oct. 2 — at North, 7:00 p.m. The second half of the season opens on the road against a North squad that has also yet to win — the kind of game that decides who turns their season around.

Oct. 8 — vs. South Mountain, 7:00 p.m. A Thursday-night home game. South Mountain has just one win, and Central will like its chances under the lights at home.

Oct. 16 — at Trevor Browne, 7:00 p.m. Another winless opponent. The Bruins are 0-5, making this one of Central’s best shots at a breakthrough.

Oct. 23 — at Betty H. Fairfax, 7:00 p.m. A trip to face the Stampede, another program with just one win on the season.

Oct. 29/30 — vs. Camelback. The regular-season finale at home against the Spartans, who are also winless. The exact date varies by source — Central’s campus calendar lists it among the final-week fixtures.

Season Notes

The defense has kept Central competitive in stretches — the Vista Grande game could have gone either way — but the offense’s two shutouts tell the story of a unit still finding itself. Bright spots exist: 35 points against Vista Grande showed what the Bobcats can do when the attack clicks, and several young players are getting reps that should pay off in the second half.

What’s Next

Here is the encouraging part: every remaining opponent is beatable. On3’s computer predictions favor Central in most of the October games, with the North, Trevor Browne, and South Mountain matchups all grading out as close to coin flips or better. If the Bobcats can steal one win — any one — the confidence could cascade. October is Central’s season now. Win two or three of these, and 0-5 becomes a footnote. Win none, and the questions get harder.
