Friday nights in West Texas carry a weight few places understand, and the San Angelo Central Bobcats opened their 2026 season determined to carry it well. Through five games, Central sits at 3-2 — a record built on two statement wins, two narrow setbacks, and an offense that looks ready for the grind of District 2-6A.
The Bobcats entered the fall with a program pedigree to defend: two state titles and 37 playoff appearances in school history. Coming off an 8-4 campaign in 2025, Central’s faithful at San Angelo Stadium — the 17,500-seat home the Bobcats share with the city — have been watching a team round into form at exactly the right time.
Game-by-Game: The 2026 Schedule
Aug. 28 — Abilene: W 28-23. Central opened the season the way every West Texas program wants to: a Friday-night win at home. The Bobcats edged the Eagles 28-23 in a tight opener that set an early tone.

Sept. 4 — at Mansfield Lake Ridge: L 28-47. A long trip to the DFW area ended in Central’s worst loss of the young season. The Eagles’ offense proved too much, and the Bobcats fell to 1-1.
Sept. 11 — Abilene Cooper: L 21-28. A frustrating home defeat. Central dropped a 21-28 decision to the Cougars, falling below .500 and making the next two weeks feel like a pivot point.
Sept. 18 — at El Paso Montwood: W 42-7. The pivot swung hard. The Bobcats traveled west and delivered their most complete performance of the season, thumping the Rams 42-7 in a rout that announced the offense had arrived.
Sept. 25 — Belton: W 52-29. Central followed it up with an even bigger statement at home: 52 points against the Tigers to close non-district play on a two-game winning streak.

Oct. 9 — at Midland Greenwood, 7:00 p.m. The Bobcats’ final tune-up before district play begins, on the road against the Rangers at J.M. King Memorial Stadium.
Oct. 16 — vs. Midland Lee, 7:00 p.m. District 2-6A play opens at home against the Rebels — a measuring-stick game for Central’s playoff seeding.
Oct. 23 — at Odessa High, 7:00 p.m. A trip to Ratliff Stadium, where the Bronchos always make life difficult for visitors.
Oct. 30 — vs. Midland High, 7:00 p.m. The Bulldogs visit San Angelo Stadium on a Friday night that could decide the district race.
Nov. 6 — at Odessa Permian, 7:00 p.m. The regular-season finale. Permian — yes, that Permian, of Friday Night Lights fame — is off to a 5-0 start and will test every yard the Bobcats can find.
Season Notes
The numbers tell a story of an offense finding its stride: 94 points across the two September wins, a season-high 52 against Belton. The defense, meanwhile, showed flashes — holding Montwood to a single touchdown — but will need to tighten up against a district slate that features some of the most explosive attacks in 6A West Texas.
What’s Next
Everything now funnels toward District 2-6A. Central has not won a district title since 2017, and with the non-district schedule closing at 3-2, the Bobcats have given themselves a fighting chance. Survive Greenwood on Oct. 9, and four district games — including home dates with Midland Lee and Midland, and the trip to Permian — will decide whether this season becomes a memorable one or just another November playoff cameo.
