Wednesday, October 7

The Central High School Bulldogs of Springfield, Missouri, opened the 2026 fall football season with an emphatic statement, then ran into the realities of a tough schedule. Through early October, Central stands at 1-2 according to the MSHSAA schedule page — a dominant win over Hillcrest followed by narrow and lopsided losses — with the bulk of the October slate still ahead and results for the Lighthouse Christian and Rolla games yet to be reported.

The season began on Aug. 31 with a 36-6 rout of Hillcrest on the road, a performance that suggested the Bulldogs were ready for a strong year. But the momentum didn’t hold. On Sept. 7, Central dropped a tight 12-16 decision to Parkview at home, and on Sept. 14 the Bulldogs were overwhelmed 62-6 at East Newton. The posted schedule lists a Sept. 21 home date with Lighthouse Sr. High and an Oct. 5 visit from Rolla, but no scores for either game had been reported to MSHSAA as of Oct. 7, leaving the official record at 1-2.

Game-by-Game Schedule

Monday, Aug. 31 — at Hillcrest (Hornets) — W 36-6. A commanding road opener. Central’s offense clicked early and the defense held Hillcrest to a single score.

Monday, Oct. 19 — at Seneca (Indians) — 6:00 p.m. The Bulldogs travel to face a Seneca team sitting at 4-2.

Monday, Oct. 26 — vs Mt. Vernon (Mountaineers) — 6:00 p.m. The regular season closes at home against a 3-3 Mt. Vernon side.

Season Notes

The 36-6 opening win over Hillcrest remains the high-water mark and proof of what this team can do when it executes. The Parkview loss stung because it was winnable, while the East Newton blowout showed how far the Bulldogs are from Missouri’s top tier. One quirk of the record-keeping: MSHSAA’s schedule page flags the school as no longer a member institution, and Central’s posted results mirror the school’s junior varsity results on MaxPreps — so fans should treat the posted record as the school’s official MSHSAA listing rather than a fully audited varsity ledger.

What’s Next

The October stretch decides the season. Cassville (5-1) and Seneca (4-2) are the measuring sticks, and Mt. Vernon (3-3) is a winnable finale if the Bulldogs find their Aug. 31 form. With three games left and no postseason margin for error, Central needs its defense to rediscover the Hillcrest blueprint.
