MUMBAI: The Dasara and Durga Puja festive window has delivered one of the most crowded release slates of the year, with five films and a marquee OTT finale landing between October 14 and 16. Here is everything arriving this week.

The biggest draw is Jailer 2, which hits theatres on October 15. Rajinikanth returns as the fearsome Muthuvel Pandian in the sequel to his 2023 blockbuster, once again directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. The film boasts one of the most star-studded ensembles of the year — Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan and Hrithik Roshan all feature — and trade expectations are sky-high, particularly in the southern states where advance bookings have reportedly been frenetic.

October 16 brings a triple bill, starting with Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam. Rajkummar Rao headlines this drama as Ujjwal Nikam, the special public prosecutor of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks case. Directed by Avinash Arun and co-starring Wamiqa Gabbi and Jaideep Ahlawat, the film arrives with the gravity of its subject matter and strong curiosity around Rao’s portrayal of one of India’s most famous legal figures.

Sharing the October 16 date is Nayyi Navelli, Yami Gautam’s horror-comedy in which she plays a mysterious bride who may or may not be a Daayan. The film marks Balaji Mohan’s Hindi directorial debut, and its genre blend — festive-season scares mixed with comedy — is a deliberate play for family audiences looking for lighter fare during the holidays.

The third October 16 release is Ranabaali, the period epic starring Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna. Set against the backdrop of the 1876-78 Madras famine, the film is the most ambitious of the week’s releases in scale, and its pairing of two of the biggest young stars in Indian cinema has given it significant pre-release buzz.

For those staying home, the big OTT event is the premiere of the final season of Koffee With Karan. Season 9, the show’s last, begins streaming on October 14 on JioHotstar — an end-of-an-era moment for the celebrity chat show that has defined Bollywood’s celebrity culture conversation for two decades.

The week’s slate also lands in the shadow of Drishyam: The Conclusion, which is still running strong after crossing Rs 500 crore worldwide. With so many new releases competing for screens from October 15 onwards, the coming days will be a stern test of the holdover’s staying power.

Box-office watchers say the festive window has historically rewarded films that arrive with momentum, and all five releases have been positioned to capitalise on the extended holiday period. Whether Jailer 2’s star power, Prahaar’s prestige subject, Nayyi Navelli’s genre fun or Ranabaali’s epic scale wins the weekend remains to be seen — but cinemagoers, at least, have never had more choice.
