Rajinikanth has done it again. Jailer 2, the superstar’s sequel to his 2023 blockbuster, stormed theatres on October 15 and registered one of the biggest opening days in the history of Tamil cinema — reportedly collecting Rs 59.70 crore net in India on day one, with a worldwide gross of Rs 125.25 crore. (All figures in this report are reported estimates attributed to trade tracker Sacnilk, not official producer numbers.)

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner, the film sees the 75-year-old icon return as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer whose quiet life once again erupts into violence. Anirudh Ravichander’s music, which played a major role in the first film’s cultural footprint, returns for the sequel.

The language-wise split tells the story of where the film’s muscle lies. The Tamil version led overwhelmingly with an estimated Rs 43.35 crore, playing to 70.8 per cent occupancy across 9,326 shows. The Telugu version followed with Rs 12.50 crore at 56.2 per cent occupancy. The Hindi version contributed Rs 3.50 crore at a modest 22 per cent occupancy, while the Kannada version added Rs 0.35 crore at 54 per cent occupancy.

Jailer 2 day one occupancy figures led by Tamil version at 70.8 percent across 9326 shows

The domestic gross for day one is estimated at Rs 70.25 crore, while overseas markets reportedly contributed Rs 55 crore, taking the worldwide total to Rs 125.25 crore. The film drew approximately 37.47 lakh footfalls on its opening day, playing 16,599 shows across India at an overall occupancy of 55.4 per cent — numbers that underline the sheer scale of the release.

Advance bookings had already signalled the storm. Pre-sales closed at an estimated Rs 41.48 crore gross, and the film reportedly crossed one million tickets on BookMyShow before release — a marker of the anticipation surrounding Rajinikanth’s return to his most beloved recent character.

There was also off-screen drama around the release. Reports suggest that multiplex chains PVR INOX and Cinepolis skipped screening the Hindi version over a dispute concerning the film’s four-week window before its streaming debut — a standoff that may explain the relatively soft Hindi occupancy figures.

Jailer 2 also arrives loaded with star wattage beyond its lead. The film reportedly features cameo appearances by Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Vijay Sethupathi, Jackie Shroff, Hrithik Roshan and Vinayakan, giving fans across industries a reason to turn up.

For Tamil cinema, the opening is a statement of intent. The original Jailer became one of the highest-grossing Tamil films ever, and the sequel’s day-one haul — reportedly the biggest-ever opener for a Rajinikanth film — sets it on a trajectory that could challenge the industry’s all-time records if weekend trends hold. As always with reported estimates, the real test will be the film’s hold through its first full week.
