What most people search for as “Kantara 2” is officially Kantara: Chapter 1 — the prequel to Rishab Shetty’s 2022 cult phenomenon Kantara. After a thunderous theatrical run that began on October 2, 2025, the film made an unusually quick jump to streaming: it premiered on Amazon Prime Video on October 31, 2025, barely 29 days after its big-screen debut.
The OTT rollout came with a notable twist on languages. At launch, the film streamed in its original Kannada along with dubbed versions in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam — but not Hindi. Producer Hombale Films deliberately held the Hindi version back to complete an eight-week theatrical window, the same strategy that had powered the film’s extraordinary Hindi-belt box office run. The Hindi digital premiere followed later.
The story travels centuries back to the Kadamba dynasty era, exploring the origins of the divine legends at the heart of the franchise — the worship of Panjurli Daiva and Guliga Daiva, the forest deities of coastal Karnataka’s Tulunadu region. Rishab Shetty plays Berme, a tribal warrior and guardian of the Kantara region, who leads his people in a fierce fight to protect their sacred land and its spice trade from rival tribes and scheming royals. As with the original, the film weaves faith, folklore and fierce action into a story about the spiritual bond between man and nature.

Shetty once again writes, directs and headlines the film, supported by Rukmini Vasanth, Gulshan Devaiah and Jayaram in pivotal roles. In his own words, the prequel returns “to the roots that inspired it all” — every ritual and emotion drawn from lived culture and real traditions of the region.
The theatrical numbers were staggering. Trade reports put the worldwide collection at roughly Rs 813–816 crore, making it the most successful Indian film of 2025. In India alone, industry tracker Sacnilk had the domestic total at about Rs 599.15 crore after 28 days, with the film still running strong in its fifth week when the OTT announcement landed.

Kantara: Chapter 1 is streaming now on Prime Video. If the divine, folklore-driven world of the original pulled you in, the prequel is the essential next chapter — and the origin story the franchise was always building toward.
