The Bridgeport Central Hilltoppers are back under the lights for the 2026 fall football season, and through the first month of play they have already shown they can scrap with some of Connecticut’s best. Competing in the FCIAC — one of New England’s toughest high school conferences — Central opened against ranked opposition and now sits at 2-2 at the season’s midpoint, with the entire league slate still ahead.

The season began with a harsh welcome. On Sept. 10, the Hilltoppers traveled to Greenwich and ran into a Cardinals team ranked among Connecticut’s elite, falling 42-0. Central answered emphatically in its home opener on Sept. 18, blanking Waterbury’s Wilby 35-0. A Sept. 26 trip to Stamford produced a 39-6 loss, but the Hilltoppers responded again on Oct. 2 with a 40-16 win at Bassick in a crosstown Bridgeport rivalry game — their second victory in three weeks and a sign the offense is finding its rhythm.

Game-by-Game Schedule

Thursday, Sept. 10 — at Greenwich (Cardinals) — L 42-0. A brutal opener on the road against a state-ranked Greenwich side. The Cardinals controlled the game from kickoff, handing Central a shutout loss to start the year.

Friday, Sept. 18 — vs Wilby (Wildcats) — W 35-0. The home opener flipped the script completely. Central’s defense posted a shutout and the offense put up 35, giving the Hilltoppers their first win of the fall.

Saturday, Sept. 26 — at Stamford (Blue Wave) — L 39-6. Another road test against an FCIAC heavyweight ended in a second lopsided defeat, dropping Central to 1-2.

Friday, Oct. 2 — at Bassick (Lions) — W 40-16. The Hilltoppers claimed Bridgeport bragging rights, winning the crosstown rivalry game by three scores to even their record at 2-2.

Saturday, Oct. 10, 11:00 a.m. — vs Brien McMahon (Senators), league game. A winnable home contest that could push Central above .500 for the first time this season.

Saturday, Oct. 17, 2:00 p.m. — at New Canaan (Rams), league game. The Rams are a perennial state power — this is the schedule’s toughest remaining assignment.

Friday, Oct. 30, 5:00 p.m. — vs Fairfield Warde (Mustangs), league game. A home league matchup under the lights, and one to circle as Central’s final home league test. Note: On3’s feed also lists Notre Dame Catholic on Oct. 30, but the school’s MaxPreps schedule confirms Warde.

Saturday, Nov. 7, 2:00 p.m. — at Westhill (Vikings). A road trip to Stamford’s Westhill, and another chance to build momentum late in the year.

Saturday, Nov. 14, 11:00 a.m. — vs Ridgefield (Tigers). A strong visitor visits Lincoln Boulevard for Central’s final home game before the finale.

Thursday, Nov. 26, 10:00 a.m. — vs Harding (Presidents). The traditional Thanksgiving Day rivalry closes the season at home — the game that matters most in Bridgeport.

Season Notes and What’s Next

Through four games, Central has outscored opponents 81-97, and the pattern is clear: the Hilltoppers punish the teams they’re favored to beat (shutout over Wilby, 40-16 over Bassick) but have struggled against the FCIAC’s top tier (Greenwich, Stamford). The five remaining league and rivalry games will decide whether this season finishes at or above .500. The Oct. 10 home game against Brien McMahon shapes up as the swing game of the fall — a win there sets up real momentum before the daunting New Canaan trip. And whatever happens in between, the season ends the way Bridgeport football always ends: with Harding on Thanksgiving morning.
