In a significant organisational shake-up ahead of the 2027 Punjab assembly elections, the Congress high command has appointed former India hockey captain and Jalandhar Cantt MLA Pargat Singh as the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.
Pargat Singh replaces Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who had been leading the state unit. The announcement was made by the party’s central leadership, which said the decision was taken after wide consultations with state leaders.
The appointment is being seen as the Congress’s attempt to project a fresh, credible face in Punjab — one that combines sporting glory, grassroots political experience and a clean image. Pargat Singh, a former captain of the Indian hockey team, is among the most respected sports personalities to have entered politics.

A three-time Olympian, Pargat Singh captained India at the Barcelona and Atlanta Olympics and was regarded as one of the finest defenders of his generation. He entered electoral politics and was elected as the MLA from Jalandhar Cantt, where he has built a reputation as an accessible and articulate legislator.
Party insiders say his appointment is aimed at energising the cadre and reconnecting with voters, particularly the youth, ahead of the 2027 polls. Punjab has been a challenging state for the Congress, which lost power to the Aam Aadmi Party in 2022 and has since been working to rebuild its organisation.
The road ahead, however, is far from easy. The new state chief will have to manage factionalism within the party, counter the ruling AAP’s narrative and take on both the BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal in a multi-cornered contest.

Political observers say Pargat Singh’s non-controversial image and his connect with Punjab’s sporting culture could work in his favour. Hockey enjoys an emotional connect in the state, and the Congress will be hoping some of that goodwill rubs off on the party.
Reacting to his appointment, Pargat Singh thanked the party leadership for reposing faith in him and said his priority would be to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots and take the party’s message to every village and town in Punjab.
Warring, the outgoing president, congratulated his successor and assured him of full cooperation, signalling — at least publicly — a smooth transition at the top.
With less than two years to go for the assembly elections, the Congress has placed its bet on a captain — this time, to lead not a hockey team but the party’s campaign to reclaim Punjab.
