NEW DELHI: Delhi Capitals on Tuesday announced that former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has been appointed as the franchise’s assistant and batting coach ahead of IPL 2027. The appointment, made public on October 13, 2026, marks Yuvraj’s first formal coaching role since his retirement from professional cricket.

Yuvraj, 44, remains one of the most decorated limited-overs cricketers India has produced. He represented the country in 304 one-day internationals, 40 Tests and 58 T20 internationals, and was a member of both the 2007 T20 World Cup-winning side and the 2011 ODI World Cup-winning team, where his all-round heroics earned him the Player of the Tournament award.

The move reunites Yuvraj with head coach Sourav Ganguly, under whom he played a large part of his international career. Welcoming the appointment, Yuvraj said he was looking forward to “teaming up with Dada” again, signalling that the dressing-room chemistry between the two former India teammates is expected to carry over into the coaching box.

There is a homecoming element to the appointment as well. Yuvraj played for the franchise in 2015, back when it was still called the Delhi Daredevils, after the team bought him for a record Rs 16 crore at the auction — the highest price paid for a player at that point in IPL history. More than a decade later, he returns to the same dressing room, this time to shape its batters.

DC chairman Parth Jindal and co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi both welcomed the appointment, underlining the franchise’s ambition heading into the IPL 2027 season. Their endorsement places Yuvraj at the centre of the team’s cricketing leadership group alongside Ganguly, a pairing the franchise will hope blends experience with a modern, aggressive batting template.

What makes Yuvraj a natural fit for the role is the quiet coaching work he has already done outside official titles. Over the past few years, he has mentored a generation of Punjab’s brightest batting talent — among them Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh — guiding them through technique, temperament and the mental side of the game. All three have spoken warmly of his influence, and their rise through the domestic and international ranks has only strengthened his reputation as a coach in waiting.

For Delhi Capitals, the timing is significant. Batting has repeatedly been the side’s weak link in recent campaigns, with the team often struggling to find consistency at the top of the order and a reliable finisher in the middle. Yuvraj, a left-hander famous for his fearless striking and match-turning innings, brings precisely the aggressive mindset the franchise’s batting unit has lacked.

The appointment also fits a broader trend across the IPL of former star players moving into senior coaching roles, as franchises increasingly value dressing-room credibility alongside tactical know-how. With the 2027 season still months away, Delhi’s backroom is now taking shape around a captain-and-coach combination rooted in Indian cricketing pedigree.

Supporters will be watching closely to see whether Yuvraj’s presence translates into a braver, more expressive batting line-up. On paper, at least, Delhi Capitals have given their batters a mentor who knows exactly what it takes to win on the biggest stages — because he has done it himself.
