BENGALURU: Good news for travellers on one of India’s busiest corridors — the Bengaluru–Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper, South India’s first sleeper version of the semi-high-speed train, is expected to roll out around October 10–11, bringing a faster overnight option to the high-demand route.
Launch timeline
Railway officials and reports indicate the service is likely to be flagged off next weekend, with October 10 or 11 emerging as the probable launch window. It will be only the second Vande Bharat Sleeper in the country after the Howrah–Guwahati service.
The sleeper Vande Bharat is a flagship Make-in-India project, with 16-coach rakes being manufactured to bring airline-style comfort to overnight rail journeys. After years of trials and refinements, the platform is finally ready for commercial rollout on high-demand corridors.
Route and timings
The train is expected to cover the distance between Bengaluru and Mumbai in roughly 16 hours as an overnight service — making it the fastest direct rail connection between the two cities. The route is likely to run via key stations including Solapur, Kalaburagi, Raichur and Yadgir, improving connectivity for Karnataka’s Kalyana Karnataka region as well.
For the Kalyana Karnataka region, the new service is a big deal — direct, fast connectivity to both Bengaluru and Mumbai has been a long-standing demand, and the sleeper Vande Bharat finally delivers it.
Exact departure and arrival timings are awaited, but the overnight schedule is designed for business travellers and families who want to sleep through the journey and arrive fresh.
What’s special about the sleeper variant
Unlike the chair-car Vande Bharats, the sleeper version offers hotel-like berths with improved cushioning, sealed gangways, bio-vacuum toilets, and modern passenger amenities. The train is capable of running at 180 kmph, with modern safety systems including Kavach.
Passengers can expect multiple classes — including AC first, two-tier and three-tier — along with onboard catering and aircraft-style interiors. The first AC coach of the new sleeper rake has already been unveiled, showcasing the upgraded interiors that officials say set a new benchmark for overnight rail travel in India.
Why this route matters
The Bengaluru–Mumbai corridor is among the most congested in the country, with flights expensive and existing overnight trains running full. A premium, faster sleeper option fills a long-standing gap — and going by the response to the first sleeper Vande Bharat, demand is expected to be strong.
Once the official timetable and fares are announced, bookings are likely to open on the IRCTC platform. Travellers planning October journeys between the two metros should watch this space.
