Delhi airport terminal building, a major aviation hub for international flights

An Indian pilot’s extraordinary courage in the cockpit of a FlyDubai aircraft has earned him international praise after he fought off a violent mid-air attack by his own co-pilot and landed the plane safely with everyone on board.

Captain Smit Machchhar was operating FlyDubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Saturday when his co-pilot, an Omani national identified as Hamam al-Hammami, allegedly attacked him inside the cockpit with a crash axe — a heavy emergency tool normally stowed in the flight deck — leaving the captain injured.

How the captain saved the flight

Despite his injuries and the confined space of the cockpit, Machchhar managed to overpower the attacker, regain control of the aircraft, declare an emergency and bring it down safely at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport. Passengers on board were unaware of the full horror unfolding just metres away until the plane was safely on the ground.

The co-pilot was taken into custody immediately after landing. Israeli authorities are treating the incident as a suspected terror attack, and a full investigation is under way with the cooperation of UAE aviation authorities.

Praise from Dubai’s Crown Prince and Netanyahu

News of Machchhar’s heroism travelled fast. Dubai’s Crown Prince publicly praised the Indian captain’s bravery, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally invited Machchhar — along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi — to Israel’s Independence Day torch-lighting ceremony in honour of his actions.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the captain is “recovering well” from his injuries. Messages of appreciation have poured in from the aviation fraternity and the Indian diaspora, with many calling him a symbol of the professionalism Indian pilots are known for worldwide.

Terror link under investigation

According to a CNN report cited by the UAE’s ambassador to the United States, Yousef Al Otaiba, images of a terrorist nature were found on the suspect’s social media accounts. Investigators are now examining the co-pilot’s background, his radicalisation trail and possible motives for the attack.

FlyDubai said it is cooperating fully with the authorities. The incident has reignited debate around cockpit security protocols and crew psychological screening on commercial flights, even as officials stress that such events remain extremely rare in an industry that carries billions of passengers safely each year.

For now, the story the world is telling is one of composure under fire — an Indian captain who, bleeding and under attack, refused to give up the controls. In doing so, Smit Machchhar saved every life on board.
