The Union Public Service Commission has declared the result of the Civil Services (Main) Examination 2026, shortlisting 2,526 candidates for the Personality Test, the final stage of India’s most competitive examination. The result was published on the Commission’s website, upsc.gov.in, on Thursday, 5 November.
The Mains examination was held from 21 to 30 August, and 13,343 candidates who had cleared the Preliminary Examination were eligible to appear. Of those, 2,526 now move to the interview stage, competing for roughly 1,016 vacancies across the Indian Administrative Service, the Indian Police Service, the Indian Foreign Service and the other central services.
The result has been released as a PDF listing roll numbers, with a name-wise list also published. Candidates can check their status without any login credentials by visiting upsc.gov.in, opening the Examination menu and selecting the Written Results section. The list is arranged by roll number; the serial numbers in it are not All India Ranks, and the notice carries no individual marks or cut-off scores.
Qualified candidates now face a firm deadline. Every one of the 2,526 must log in to the Commission’s online portal, upsconline.nic.in, between 11 and 25 November and submit the Detailed Application Form, even if there is nothing to change in the details already given. The window closes at 6 pm on 25 November, and candidates who miss it will not receive the e-summon letter for the interview. The interview schedule itself has not yet been announced.
The numbers tell the story of the examination’s scale. More than 13,000 candidates sat the Mains, and fewer than one in five of them have survived to the interview. The final selection, after the Personality Test, will fill just over a thousand posts — a ratio that explains why the result is watched so closely by lakhs of aspirants and their families across the country.
For those who did not make the list, the Commission’s advice is the same as every year: the marks and cut-offs will be published after the final result, and the next cycle begins soon enough. For the 2,526 who did, the examination is not over. The Personality Test, worth 275 marks against the Mains’ 1,750, has decided many a final rank in the past, and preparation for it — current affairs, the detailed application form, and the interview board’s wide-ranging questions — starts now.
The UPSC result is one of the most searched topics in the country this week, and the Commission’s website saw heavy traffic within hours of the announcement. Candidates are advised to rely only on the official list on upsc.gov.in and to treat any cut-off figures circulating on social media as unofficial estimates until the Commission publishes them.
